Who we are.

FIOKA works alongside Indigenous communities, wherever they are, to preserve their languages and knowledge and bring them fully into the digital world. We build the tools, systems, and partnerships that make it possible.

Each community decides what is kept, shared and how. The tools and methods are open and designed to work for any Indigenous language. Our first proof of concept is the Dagbanli Dictionary, which you can read about on the projects page.

We are a non-profit foundation. Our legal details are in the imprint.

Two symbols, one idea: knowledge passed on.

The Echo F

The arms of the F repeat and fade, like a voice carried from one generation to the next. Each echo is someone passing words on to the person who will pass them on again. The echoes are always ember: the colour of the voice.

The story circle

People seated in a circle around a fire: the oldest way knowledge has been passed on. Ten people, one fire at the centre. It is our supporting symbol, and wherever you see it, someone is about to share a story.

Brand and press kit

Who controls the archive matters as much as what it holds.

Community-Led Partnership

Every project is co-designed with the community it serves.

Data Sovereignty

Communities decide what knowledge is shared, with whom, and under what terms.

The community remains in control

Open-Source Technology

Transparent, adaptable tools that can be shared and improved upon.

Sustainable Preservation

Prioritising long-term capacity-building within communities.
